rhinoplasty 1923 (Dr. Henry Schireson, hotel room)

Historical19234 sources

Historical: primary or scholarly source. Research label: Historical (contemporaneous press; Parker line contested).

What is on record

The Ziegfeld comedian had her nose reduced in 1923 by Henry J. Schireson, in her hotel room; an AP photo shows Brice with Schireson. Dorothy Parker's line, that she "cut off her nose to spite her race", is attributed in the Jewish Women's Archive entry and *J. Weekly*; Brice denied that motive. Streisand played her in *Funny Girl* (1968).

As printed

Parker: "cut off her nose to spite her race" (JWA, search snippet only). Biographer (via JWA): Brice "must have hoped that the operation would make her look less Jewish."
